My first gridded drawing! I measured out squares on my ref and my actual drawing paper.
I wrote more stuff on my dA description haha

cheers!

EDIT: after watching http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=28ba5Q0NrQ8
(!!!! link contains SPOILERS for Doctor Who the End of Time !!!!)
I love David and David's Doctor even more. if that's possible. which i'm not sure it is.
Matt Smith has a lot to live up to as number 11
David's regeneration scene better be freaking epic.
I am beyonddd excited. but I also don't want New Year's to ever come because then it's really over for Ten):

Jaejoong

Kim Jaejoong or Hero Jaejoong of TVXQ/DBSK, which I believe is a Korean pop band?
I'm probably wrong about some part of that last sentence.

This was a (slightly belated) birthday present for a friend. She's a fan of this guy. I did not know who he was until I looked him up.

2H, H, HB, 2B, 4B, 8B.
I got new pencils!

Click for full-view. Also, I'm now also posting on deviantART at: SUNFLAKE.DEVIANTART.COM so check me out there!

baby

HB only. Sorry if you can see the annoying line across the middle of his/her (I can never tell with babies...) face and the text. I've been drawing on the blank backs of weekly schedules my English teacher likes to print out even though he probably kills an entire forest every year doing that....

Copied from a Sears Portrait Studio ad. Too lazy to scan it in, but I believe the photo is on their website in a flashy little slideshow. The baby's wearing a Santa hat, even though it's too early for Christmas (or at least I think so)

James

James Franco.
Tristan & Isolde, Spider-Man, Milk, Pineapple Express
(I've actually only seen the first two of the above listed movies)

This was a basic study in proportions drawn entirely in HB. I did this at school in probably under one and a half hours. Copied from a Gucci by GUCCI Men's fragrance ad I tore out from a magazine because it was a good facial closeup. It had one of those open and sniff samples of the eau de toilette that it was advertising. So yes, this drawing smells like man. As did I after working on it.
REF

Yeah, I know, it's not David Tennant. But I think I'm going to practice a bit more on facial proportions before I draw DT, so I don't screw him up.

Zooey

Zooey Deschanel
(500 Days of Summer, Elf, Yes Man)
She's also in She & Him with M. Ward. And she's engaged to Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard.

This is the result of me over-abusing my 4B and my blending tissue. I'm not very happy with the outcome (I personally think it doesn't look anything like HER), and it took me way too long to finish. I would guess arounnnnd 7 hours (but then again I didn't actually time it... it probably seems like such a long time because it was very, very troublesome).

I fixed her face (meaning I would erase her nose or her eye and draw it again in a slightly different spot) an innumerable amount of times. I think it more difficult than usual because of the slight tilt of her head. Note to self: don't draw people who are too pretty, because it's too hard to get them to look right.

Anyways, she gave me a lot more trouble than EWAN did. I'm sorry, Zooey. It's not my fault your face is too perfectly proportional to copy onto paper.

Let's hope my next portrait isn't such a disaster?
(spoilers: it's proooobably going to be David Tennant. I'm excited :D)

also, LINKS are in caps because I can't figure out how to get them to show up in a different color.

update

I've updated my layout and banner for a cleaner look. I recently got a tablet for my birthday, so I've been testing it out. It's really different and hard to get used to! I drew this hand to practice blending skin using Corel Painter and just to practice drawing digitally. I might be posting more digital stuff, but traditional is still my favorite. I want to try some coffee painting, so keep your eyes out for that!

amor

"LOVE CONQUERS ALL"
I'd like to blame my growing love of typography on Quoteskine and Wordboner.
Doodled this in Latin class during a lecture on passive tense. Inked with an old Papermate pen I found in my house.

last day

I really like this blending with tissues technique... it makes everything look smooth and shiny :D
This self portrait actually reminds me a lot of loish.deviantart.com 's style. I love her work, so I'm pleased with this, even though (again) it doesn't really look like me.
Click the image for full-view, please!

So, this is my last day of being 14. I don't think I'll look any different tomorrow. Oh, and my hair is only in braids because I want to get it wavy.

Don't expect a lot of posts soon... PSAT's coming up, so I'm gonna have to start studying a lot for that.

Cheers,
S.

puella

These are old. Like a year old. I made these last year in art class. Printmaking was one of the first projects we did. This is a linoleum cut, which was way easier and less time consuming than the woodcut, Jaguar, I did. I did the woodcut first, and then got lazy for the linoleum cut so I traced some magazine ad. (I added her necklace though).

So as far as this goes, this is really really unoriginal. Plus the prints didn't turn out real well... I like the top left purple-green one the best, although the bottom right orangey-red one turned out the cleanest.

I'm posting it now, because school has been devouring my free time and I haven't really drawn anything worth posting. Plus, my art teacher just found these the other day after losing them for a year... haha.

I JUST CHANGED MY FACEBOOK LANGUAGE TO LATIN AND IT IS AMAZING.

I promise I'll try to get up something legit soon.
(psst, if all goes according to plan, I should be able to squeeze in a mirror self portrait this weekend! which is something i haven't done in too long)

Michaelangelo

Eh, quick update. Haven't drawn my hands for a while, so enjoy!
(I promise my fingers look more proportional in real life)
:D

Also, learning about Renaissance artists in AP Euro has made me more jealous than I've ever been. Curse you and your skills, Michaelangelo.

school ):

I probably won't be posting very often since school's started. The homework load is unbelievable... maybe I'll post some doodles from class? Haha, let's hope not. I don't want my art life dying on me again.

Ewan

Ewan McGregor,
one of my favorite actors
(Star Wars, The Island, Moulin Rouge)
He's also going to be in The Men Who Stare at Goats which comes out in November

This is my first attempt at really, really realistic shading as well as my first realism portrait in a while. I'm happy to say that I'm very pleased with how it turned out. At first, I was afraid it wouldn't look like him, but it actually kind of does! But I know that I need to work on hair and lips for future portraits.

One of my blending tissues (first time I've tried this method. It works really well)

Ref: 1
and a BIG thank you to Cataclysm-X for her amazing tutorials!

don't fade into the background

I know you still
would rather mess with me than get going
She's been building up a castle in LA
Roll the dice for me
-"Fences", Phoenix

A friend and I are doing themed art trades. First theme: fence.
In a way I suppose that this falls in the same category as the drawing in my "let's be honest" entry. I'm exploring this type of style and thinking of making it into a series. If I do, It's going to be about beauty and what can lie underneath the underneath. Looks aren't everything.

Click to full-view. It's rather messy, I apologize, but unfortunately that's just how I draw. (On a slightly unrelated note, I would love to try out some Blu-Tack as a graphite eraser. I've heard it works wonders.)

No references! Not drawing from sight is definitely out of my comfort zone, but it's good to dabble in different things, I think.
Inspiration: Phoenix (lovely, lovely band. definitely one of my favorites.)

They're wearing the same thing because of my lack of creativity.

let's be honest

What is beauty?

Secrets:
1. It looks better in real life.
2. I upped the contrast using Picasa.
3. I hate noses.
4. Eyebrows are overrated.
5. I'm taking a break from drawing strictly realism.
6. I've been on an art block for a while now.
7. THIS ENDS IT!

I haven't been drawn myself in a while so I'm just trying to get back on track.

summer

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in (500) Days of Summer
Just a quick sketch I did. It doesn't do them nearly enough justice, I'm afraid. I want to see this movie so badly, but it's not playing anywhere near me...

vacation

I just got back from vacation a couple of days ago. This was just a little sketch I did of myself while sitting in the backseat of the car looking at the rearview mirror. It's done in ballpoint pen, a medium I'm usually not comfortable drawing in because I can't erase. But I think this turned out pretty well. I like the kind of ragged style, since I usually rely on pencil and stumps to create a smooth feel in my portraits.

Also, this band makes me feel so happy(: You might have heard this song on the Bacardi mojito commercial... I would embed the video, but it's disabled.

I actually own the magazine, though so I didn't draw it looking at the link above. Click the image to enlarge it!

两只蝴蝶

Two Butterflies
I painted this for Showcase 2009, which was so fun.
It's actually for my mom, because her favorite Chinese song is called "两只蝴蝶".
It's hanging in our formal dining room now.
Sorry for the crappy picture quality, but these were all taken on my cell phone.
My camera is lame and dysfunctional.
I hope you like the in-progress photos!

ONE MORE DAY!
Only math and english finals to go...

one more week

Charcoal doodles of some magazine pictures.
Top is actor, Anton Yelchin. Bottom two are Burberry ads.
I believe all three are from an ELLE magazine, but I'm not sure.

ONE MORE WEEK OF SCHOOL!

):

Penelope Cruz.
Copied from a L'Oreal advertisement in ELLE magazine by the request of a friend.
Drawn backstage during Showcase 2009 while laying on a wooden dance floor.
I'm going to miss performing.
And my back is sore from being propped up in an apparently bad position for over an hour.

EDITED: art show

Surrealism, though it isn't very surreal. This was based off a reference of my old backyard.

"Light" was the topic for this one. I only used four colors: purple, yellow, white, black. It's not finished yet, though.

These two were both put up for a school art show. Sorry for the lame photo quality, but they were taken on my phone. I'll post better photos once I finish the second one, and once I find the reference for the first. (:

EDIT: The "Light" painting is going to be in an art show/benefit for my school again! (I'll post the references of the surrealism once my scanner stops acting up.)

The thing shooting out of the hand spiderman-style is a ribbon, not a sword. The blue on white print was for my brother, and I'm planning on cutting up the red shirt to make a tote.

Crocheted from when I was sick and bedridden. It's a cross-body bag and about the size of my hand. The inside lining is handsewn.

faces

Imaginary people seem to be more interesting than real ones. I love how easily charcoal spreads and smears. I think it's the most gorgeous, free-flowing, and easy to control medium I have ever worked with.

Though I have to admit my drawing skills with no references are improving, I'll try to draw some actual humans soon.
